Worksite Wellness!!
Tired of being cooped up at work? Unable to take care of your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs because you’re spending too much time at the office? Here are a couple of studies that your employer might want to check out.
According to the American Heart Association, effective at-work fitness programs can reduce the risk of heart disease and decrease the economic burdens of chronic diseases. Companies can save anywhere from $3 to $15 for every $1 spent on health and wellness within 12-18 months of implementation. Programs are known to increase worker productivity, reduce absenteeism, lower turnover rates and decrease healthcare costs. When selecting the appropriate program for your employees think about these categories: tobacco cessation and prevention, REGULAR physical activity, stress management/reduction, early detection/screening, nutrition education and promotion, and weight management.
Health Education & Behavior (2009; 36, 601-614) performed a study to see the effects of 20 minutes of meditation and yoga per day on office workers, who otherwise exercised less than 30 minutes on most days of the week. Subjects participated in one weekly group session during lunch and performed 20 minutes of meditation and movement daily at their desks, guided by a CD of verbal cues and music. The results: Mindful-attention awareness increased approximately 10%, while stress decreased about 11%. There was also reports of improved sleep quality for the participants.
Small investment in effective wellness programs will pay dividends to your company in the long run. Imagine how much more successful your business would be if it were fillled with healthy and happy employees!
